Our dominant societal narrative ties progress to economic growth and to the idea that consuming more is better. Therefore, more and larger market transactions are seen as an indicator of increasing well-being. It is believed that the way we express and meet our needs is through the so called "consumer choice". If societies need to move forward, under the pressure of constant growth, economic practices that increase consumption develop. Such practices include cutting costs, increasing sales, expanding markets and attracting investments. This pressure shapes every aspect of our daily lives, including the way we dress and the fashion sector in different problematic ways.

Such narratives are fictions, constructed to delude people into supporting the dominant way of life even though that way of life runs counter to what they would otherwise support, and to silence the voices of people who seek to tell the truth.. We have become very removed from what our clothing really is, we have no idea how our garments are produced, by whom and at what cost. And because most of us do not know what it takes to make a t-shirt, for example, we think a 4.99 or lower price mark is normal. No, it’s not. Join a workshop, try to make the simplest of t-shirts and the distorted lines between value, cost and price will be apparent to you. Besides, you’ll discover how gratifying making things with your own two hands is, and have lots of fun.

Ci siamo allontanati tremendamente dalla realtà dei nostri abiti. Non abbiamo idea di come vengono prodotti, da chi e a quale costo. Perché la maggior parte di noi non sa cosa ci vuole per produrre una t-shirt, per esempio, un prezzo di 4.99 ci può sembrare normale. Non lo è. Iscriviti a un workshop, prova a cucire la più semplice tra le t-shirt e le discrepanze tra valore, costo e prezzo risulteranno evidenti. In più scoprirai quanta soddisfazione può dare realizzare un oggetto con le proprie mani, e ti divertirai. ::::

Worldwide, a multitude of social movements and grass-roots projects recognize that our lives cannot exist independent of our environment and our communities and strive to create a leave-things-better economy. Complex systems, including belief systems, can change. The French philosopher Edgar Morin says that "all the great transformations or creations have been unthinkable until they actually came to pass […] the fact that a belief system is deeply rooted does not mean it cannot change". Change can unfold quietly as interventions and disruptions accumulate across time. In an age of networks, even the smallest actions can contribute to the transformation of the system as a whole – even if no one had that outcome explicitly in mind.
You can choose to be a maker instead of a consumer. Lots of people with the most different backgrounds and from all over the world are embracing sewing among other things as a creative outlet and a sustainable means of self-production. Some of them even took their passion further and found a meaningful way of supplementing income in these times when our political and social discourse is dominated by words like flexibility, gig economy and nomadism.
This year I reached again to our generous sewing community asking some of our fellow makers why do they sew.
Here are their answers:

In tutto il mondo, una moltitudine di movimenti sociali e progetti grassroots, a nascita popolare spontanea, riconoscono che le nostre vite non possono esistere in maniera indipendente dalle comunità e dall’ambiente e cercano di creare un’economia basata sul modello “leave-things-better” (in traduzione “lascia le cose meglio di come le hai trovate”). I sistemi complessi come anche i sistemi di valori correnti possono cambiare. Il filosofo francese Edgar Morin dice che ” le grandi trasformazioni o creazioni sono state tutte impensabili finché non si sono realizzate […] il fatto che un sistema di valori abbia radici profonde non significa che non possa cambiare”. Il cambiamento può avvenire in silenzio mentre interventi e interruzioni si accumulano col tempo. Nell’epoca delle reti, della connettività e dei social media, anche la più apparentemente insignificante azione può contribuire alla trasformazione del sistema in toto – anche se questo non era l’esito esplicitamente inteso.
Puoi scegliere di essere un maker invece di un consumatore; uno che fa invece di uno che compra. Molte persone, provenienti da tanti contesti diversi, da tutto il mondo stanno abbracciando il cucito per esempio come sbocco creativo e modo sostenibile di auto-produzione. Alcuni hanno portato la loro passione un passo oltre e hanno trovato un modo significativo e pieno di significato di supplementare il proprio reddito, in questi tempi quando il discorso politico e sociale è dominato da parole come flessibilità , gig economy e nomadismo.
Quest’anno mi sono rivolta di nuovo alla comunità delle appassionate di cucito sartoriale, chiedendo ad alcune delle nostre amiche maker perché cuciono i propri vestiti.

I sew as way to research the construction of garments by famous designers, like the jacket I’m wearing in this photo (at an Oscars after-party), which is a hybrid of 1950s Chanel and Claire McCardell designs. For some reason, I always wanted to learn how to sew my own clothes, but never had enough time… or simply didn’t know where to look for resources. One day, back in 2009, I found out I could buy patterns online, then I was off work for some months and finally took the plunge. Sewing for me is the pleasure of making something with my hands…I get a trill at ‘constructing and engineering’… seeing something and knowing ‘I can make it’ is a fabulous feeling. Meeting fantastic people with similar interests was the totally unexpected perk that came with this hobby and makes me really happy!

This pic is a great example of why I sew. A couple of years ago in a very chic store in Manhattan called Dover Street Market, I tried on the shirt on the left. The manufacturer was Gitman Bros. I recognized the fabric print as "Home Sewing is Easy" (based on the 1940's illustrated sewing instruction booklet of the same name), manufactured by Alexander Henry. (It's actually quilting cotton.) I was able to purchase a few yards of the fabric online, and made a shirt very similar to the one I had tried on, but long-sleeve and with a much better fit. The shirt I'd tried on was more than $150 USD and I'd paid about 1/6 of that for my shirt (with quite a bit of fabric left over). It's great to be able to make your own clothes!

Coming up with design ideas, sketching them out, sourcing the perfect fabrics for what I have in mind, and then being able to create something exactly customized to fit me and my lifestyle is such an empowering experience. Making my own clothes has also transitioned my way of thinking of clothes away from the fast-fashion mindset to one of valuing every piece of clothing in my wardrobe and mending or reusing rather than simply throwing away.
