::::This post has to start with the fabric: a bourette silk double lacoste knit.

BOURETTE SILK: a coarse silk yarn spun from the waste that is produced in the manufacture of schappe silk; also produced from waste silk that is not suitable for spinning into schappe silk. The yarn is lumpy, irregular and possesses low elongation.
DOUBLE LACOSTE : a plain double knit construction based on interlock that repeats on six courses with every third row consisting in only knit stitches.::Questo articolo deve iniziare parlando del tessuto : una maglia doppio lacoste in seta bourette.

SETA BOURETTE : filato ottenuto da cascami di seta risultati dalla produzione della seta shappe o da cascami non adatti per la filatura della seta shappe. Ha un’aspetto irregolare dovuto alla presenza di nodini e fiocchettini e una bassa capacità di allungamento.
DOPPIO LACOSTE: costruzione in maglia doppia semplice basata sull’interlock che si ripete su sei ranghi con ogni terzo rango in dritto. ::::

::::I got the burgundy one as a remnant from Supercut so when I found the white version in an anonymous bin at Giesse Scampoli I went: bingo! The fabric is lightweight, airy and breathable but due to it’s construction does not have much stretch along the courses and almost none along the wales. The low elongation fibre makes it prone to wrinkling and impacts on its ability to recover. Maybe the best use for this type of fabric is a t-shirt or polo shirt. I have a t-shirt already cut and it’s been waiting to be sewn for about four months now. The rest of it (circa 5 square meters) went into this fully reversible Groove dress. The double layer means weight and extra warmth. The quilting ads dimensional stability and structure. I went with the more dramatic high low dress cut, round neck and long sleeves. The pattern offers lots of other options like a straight hem, short sleeves and other four types of necklines including a hood. ::Avendo preso lo scampolo bordeaux da Supercut quando ho trovato la versione bianca in un cestello anonimo da Giesse Scampoli ho detto: bingo! Il tessuto è leggero, traspirante e nello stesso tempo caldo, ma, per via della sua costruzione non ha molta elasticità lungo i ranghi e quasi niente lungo le file. La bassa capacità di allungamento del filato fa si che il tessuto si stropicci facilmente e non recuperi molto bene. Forse il miglior uso che se ne può fare e per t-shirt e magliette polo. Ho gia tagliato una che aspetta di essere cucita da circa quarto mesi. Il resto del tessuto (più o meno 5 metri quadri) l’ho usato per fare questo vestito Groove trapuntato, reversibile. Il doppio strato significa più peso e calore. La trapuntatura aggiunge stabilità dimensionale e struttura. Ho scelto come taglio la versione più scenografica high-low, con collo tondo e maniche lunghe. Il modello include anche un’opzione a taglio dritto, maniche corte, quattro tipi diversi di scollo e anche un cappuccio. ::::

::::I cut the pattern in both colours. I sewed on both the shoulders and attached the sleeves to the armhole, flat. Then I sewed the two layers together along the neckline opening and turned. Next were the hems and the sleeve openings. I turned them through the sides and pressed. I had to stabilise the whole thing for quilting. I used this recipe to make some quilters basting spray. I sprayed between the two layers and dry pressed. It worked perfectly!
I topstitched along the hem, sleeve openings and neckline at 1/2” and at 7/8” along the sides (dress and sleeves). Then, went crazy quilting in triple stitch (I used only the triple stitch to make this dress) for a total of 76384 single stitches. I know because I had to oil my machine just before starting and reset the counter. Quilting done I closed the side seams of the white layer. I closed the burgundy sides by sewing a lapped seam in the ditch from the white side.

Note for those of you who like the technical stuff: I first intended to do a LSb (2.02.01) type of seam but to be able to sew that “in the tunnel” of a very narrow sleeve I would have had to do lots of precision basting which I didn’t feel like doing, so I did a LSa (2.01.01) type of seam and trimmed the excess fabric close to the stitching line. :: Ho tagliato il modello in entrambi i colori. Ho cucito le spalle e ho attaccato in piano le maniche all’incavo. Ho cucito i due strati assieme lungo lo scolo e ho girato il vestito. Ho cucito uno contro l’alto i due strati anche lungo l’orlo e l’apertura delle maniche, girandoli attraverso i lati. Come dovevo stabilizzare il tutto per poter quiltare ho preparato uno spray da imbastitura e l’ho spruzzato tra i due strati per poi spianare a secco.
Ecco la traduzione della ricetta che ho trovato qui :
Mettete sul fuoco una pentola con mezzo litro di acqua e mezzo cucchiaio di sale e portate l'acqua ad ebollizione, In un'altra ciotola, stemperate 3 cucchiai di farina con un bicchiere d'acqua fredda. Quando il composto sarà ben amalgamato e privo di grumi, versatelo nella pentola. A questo punto continuate a mescolare fino a quando il tutto non sia diventato un composto fluido. Togliere dal fuoco e lasciare raffreddare. In un bottiglia spray pulita versate circa 250 ml di alcol denaturato e il composto raffreddato, chiudere la bottiglia e agitare bene.
In pratica colla di farina disciolta in alcol ;) … ha funzionato benissimo!
Ho impuntato lungo l’orlo, lo scollo e le aperture delle maniche a 1/2 pollice dal bordo e lungo i lati a 7/8. Poi ho quiltato il tutto con una cucitura tripla (ho confezionato l’intero vestito usando solo la cucitura tripla) per un totale di 76384 singoli punti. Lo so perché prima di cominciare con il qulting ho oleato la macchina e azzerato il contattore. Avendo finito, ho chiuso i lati dello strato bianco. Ho chiuso i lati dello strato bordeaux con una cucitura ribattuta.

Nota per coloro appassionati dalle cose tecniche: Ho prima pensato di fare una cucitura tipo LSb (2.02.01) ma visto che per farla “nel tunnel” di una manica molto stretta avrei dovuto imbastire con molta precisione e non me la sentivo, ho scelto di fare una cucitura tipo LSa (2.01.01) e tagliare via l’eccesso di tessuto molto vicino alla linea di cucitura. ::::

::::I really like the finished dress. I knew when I cut it, it was going to be quite short in the front (I am about 10cm taller then the figure this pattern was designed to fit) and did consider lengthening it, reducing the difference between front and back but with the bulky looking fabric it would have felt … heavy. Like this, it’s more “dynamic” and has lots more drama. For the sake of decency though, I’m going to only wear it with leggings.
Another thing I should have considered but didn’t, is to increase by about 1cm the armscye depth and with it the sleeve width; first of all because I am taller and the sleeve is pretty fitted and second because my fabric does not have much stretch left. Right now it is borderline tight, not uncomfortable or restricting but there’s no way I can fit another layer under it … you know, in case of a new ice age.::Mi piace veramente il vestito finito. Quando l’ho tagliato sapevo che sarebbe stato cortino sul davanti (io sono circa 10cm più alta della figura per la quale questo modello è stato progettato) e ho preso in considerazione di allungare il davanti riducendo così la differenza tra il davanti e il dietro ma con il tessuto spesso e rigido il tutto sarebbe potuto diventare un po' troppo…. pesante. Così com’è mi sembra più dinamico. Lo indosserò pero solo con i leggings.
Un alta cosa che avrei dovuto prendere in considerazione è quella di aggiungere 1cm al livello ascellare e quindi allargare anche la manica - come dicevo sono più alta e il modello ha poca vestibilità aggiunta nella manica, inoltre nel mio tessuto no è rimasta chissà quanta elasticità. Adesso come adesso la manica è stretta al limite; non è scomoda e non impedisce il movimento ma non credo sia possibile infilarci sotto la maglietta della salute … sapete, in caso di glaciazione improvvisa. ::::
